With the launch of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Talent (Talent) in 2017, organizations using or implementing Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations (D365FO) had questions around the difference between Talent and the HR module in D365FO. Some of those organizations are already using the HR module in FO but are interested in investing in a more holistic Human Capital Management (HCM) System. Others are in the process of implementing Talent and need to standardize their processes and make sure that their HR data is managed in one system.

Talent offers a complete HCM solution with recruitment, onboarding, offer management, leave and absence and analytics functionalities that are not available in D365FO. Microsoft is continually investing in additional functionalities and enhancements in Talent only. D365FO will not be further enhanced from a functionality perspective. 

To address this gap, Microsoft implemented an integration from Talent to D365FO. The integration is built on top of the Power Platform Data Integration model and takes advantage of the Talent Common Data Service (CDS) Data. To be clear, the integration is between CDS Core HR and D365FO. The integration allows organizations to manage the jobs, positions and employees’ data in Talent as the source of record for HR and synchronize the data with D365FO to facilitate other processes. As a result, data integrity is maintained and there is no duplication of effort to try and maintain the HR data in multiple systems.

There are four high level steps involved in configuring the integration between the two applications, and yes, it’s simply a configuration task without any development effort.

  1. Configure the Connection Set in the Power Platform admin center: This step defines the Talent CDS and D365FO environments and the legal entities/organizations included for data integration purposes.
  2. Create a new data integration project and use the template “Core HR”: This step creates the data integration project and uses the available out of the box template that includes the necessary data mappings between the two systems. In this step, select the connection set that you created during the previous step. This is a wizard style setup and is very simple to follow.
  3. Make any necessary changes to the data mappings: In the case where you do not want to include all the data entities that are available out of the box, you have the choice to make modifications and to remove some entities or fields in certain entities. You also have the capability to create new mappings between fields that are not part of the standard template with some enhanced formulas.
  4. Schedule the integration: The integration can be run on demand, but you can also schedule it to run at a set interval. You can also set notifications to be sent to specific email addresses in the case of errors/warnings. The results of the integration are visible through the Power Platform as well as in the Data Management workspace in D365 for D365FO.

Below is a snapshot of the mappings between the CDS entities for Talent and the D365FO entities.

This integration is just one example of what the Microsoft Power Platform brings to the table. The time has come to educate and empower our customers to leverage this tool to automate business processes, build intelligence, and integrate applications.
