SAP Core-to-Edge Analytics

Core intelligence needed for true transformation

SAP is a recognized leader in analytics solutions by industry analyst firms. In 2015, SAP led analytics and BI software vendors with 10% market share and $1.2 billion in analytics and BI product revenues, according to AppsRunTheWorld.

Since it introduced HANA in 2010, SAP has made great strides in plying its breakthrough in-memory technology against real-world big data challenges. SAP HANA’s ability to access and deliver information up to 100,000 times faster than what was traditionally possible, its unprecedented ability to run transactions and perform analytics on a single architecture, and its dramatic simplification and cost reduction of IT landscapes makes it a leading platform for big data analytics.

In a press statement, SAP said “contextual analytics, digital assistant capabilities, machine learning and the award-winning SAP Fiori user experience … enables customers to instantly adjust and adopt business processes and models and act on real-time insight and advice.” This in turn allows SAP to offer new solutions for their customers leveraging the SAP HANA Cloud as a PaaS and, leveraging both on-premise and hosted solutions, enables customer to extend analytics to frontline workers.

A cloud platform for innovation

Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) adoption is predicted to be among the fastest-growing sectors of cloud computing, as reported by Forbes, growing from 32% in 2017 to 56% adoption in 2020.

Launched three years ago, SAP HANA Cloud has gained popularity as the PaaS of choice for SAP customers and partners to build differentiating solutions that intelligently connect people, things and businesses. In February at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, SAP announced new capabilities and enhancements to its PaaS offering as well as a new name: SAP Cloud Platform.

New services include:

  • SAP Cloud Platform SDK for iOS
  • SAP Project Companion mobile app
  • SAP API Business Hub
  • SAP Cloud Platform Workflow service
  • SAP Cloud Platform Virtual Machine service
  • SAP Cloud Platform IoT service
  • SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services (formerly Altiscale)

SAP HANA Cloud toolbox includes SAP Leonardo (for IoT applications), SAP Clea (for Machine Learning applications), SAP BusinessObjects Cloud portfolio including SAP Digital Boardroom (for analytics and reporting applications).

With its comprehensive services and capabilities including the in-memory-power of SAP HANA, SAP Cloud Platform provides the tools and services for SAP customers and partners to extend SAP’s on-premise and cloud solutions (SAP S/4HANA, SAP SuccessFactors, SAP Ariba, SAP Fieldglass, Concur and other SAP apps) and/or build innovative, new cloud applications faster and easier than what was possible before.

Numerous SAP enterprise apps and over 1,000 partner apps have been built on SAP Cloud Platform.

Extending analytics to frontline workers

The days of (latent) IT production reports pushed out to managers are quickly coming to an end. No one wants to wait for time-consuming batch processing when far too compelling are the advantages of real-time, fact-based decision-making capabilities powered by intuitive, self-service analytics/BI tools in the hands of marketing, sales, supply chain management, manufacturing, engineering, risk management, finance, HR, frontline workers and line-of-business pros.

The push has never been stronger to extend the reach of advanced analytics solutions to more people within an organization, and SAP continues to make great strides on this front.

For example, in November of last year at SAP TechEd Barcelona, SAP announced new features and functionality across the SAP BusinessObjects Analytics portfolio of cloud and on-premises solutions. New functions, including machine learning, help users across the enterprise leverage data in new ways to gain deeper understandings of their businesses and identify new opportunities.

Machine-learning applications help businesses solve problems by, for example, removing bias in recruiting practices and automating the time-consuming invoice-matching process.

Also, the newly available SAP BusinessObjects Cloud solution provides a single experience for business users to discover, visualize, plan and predict — all in one cloud-based application, enabling frontline workers to execute on-the-fly analysis and quickly develop new services.

New enhancements to the SAP BusinessObjects Cloud include data-wrangling features that take advantage of embedded machine learning to provide data profiling, error detection and recommended visualizations. Live connectivity to SAP S/4HANA is available with plans for live connectivity to the SAP Business Warehouse application in the near future, according to SAP.

Planned innovations for SAP BusinessObjects Predictive Analytics include:

  • Operationalization of models created by expert analytics using predictive factory functionality
  • Dynamic scoring support for user-defined functions (UDF) for the SAP HANA platform
  • Seamless integration of predictive models with the SAP Fraud Management analytic application using the SAP BusinessObjects Predictive Analytics integrator

Updates to the SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) platform include enhancements to software development kits (SDKs), information design tools and commentary, set analysis, geospatial functions and new data access support for business users.

It takes an ecosystem to win in analytics

Clearly, SAP’s analytics/BI strategy is designed to help businesses get beyond limited desktop tools and move to a modern, built-for-the-cloud analytics/BI solution that is accessible to (and easily consumed by) all employees throughout the enterprise.

To bring this strategy to fruition requires support from third-party service providers such as NTT DATA with deep expertise in cloud architecture/deliver, extensive application/systems integration capabilities, and a proven track record across the entire spectrum of analytics/BI solutions.

The data required for effective decision making resides in numerous places throughout the enterprise – databases, data warehouses, operational applications, transactional systems, the Internet/Intranet, etc. Realizing the promise of analytics/BI necessitates pulling all of this disparate data together in real time without disrupting business.

As the integration capabilities of analytics/BI solutions improve and more data sources can be pulled into the analytics/BI loop, the potential new business-uses for analytics/BI expands, the cost of implementing analytics/BI comes down, the time to value of analytics/BI speeds up, and the ROI of analytics/BI grows.

Today’s offering of traditional on-premise SAP solutions now available via cloud includes core ERP apps (S/4HANA), all LOB apps, BI/analytics apps and more. Delivery options include public, private and hybrid cloud and span the entire cloud-model spectrum — SaaS, PaaS, IaaS and MCaaS.

For our part, the depth, breadth and flexibility of NTT DATA’s cloud offering enables customers of all sizes and across diverse industries to embark upon or accelerate their cloud journey with infrastructure hosting or even SAP software and hosting packaged together as part of a Partner Managed Cloud (PMC) solution.

Contact NTT DATA today to learn how our experience with cloud delivery, systems integration and SAP-based analytics/BI solutions can advance your big data initiatives.
